THE STORY

Ever fancied putting yourself through the terrible torment of trying to escape from a seemingly never-ending array of anonymous, locked rooms, never knowing why you’re there, how you got there or, moreover, how you’ll get out of there? Then you’re in luck! You’re also a weirdo, but we can’t talk…

THE EXPERIENCE

While we’re quite often easily satisfied with a graphically gory, non-intelligence-taxing, big, dumb and utterly fun shoot ’em up here at LOA (or, at least, I am), we do on occasion like to step into our frontal lobe Lycra and stretch our cerebrum down the mind-gym with a game guaranteed to give us a taut, tight, trim ‘two-pack’; and 100 Rooms may be just what the textbook training treadmill we need.

As the name probably initially clued you up on, and the intro then gave away completely like an over-excited child, the premise is gloriously simple: you’re in a hotel comprised of 42 rooms (updates to come), each differently decorated and more difficult to depart than the penthouse suite at Colditz. To overcome the door locks you need to follow clues, discover objects, make Olympian long-jump-level logical leaps, and indulge in tireless trial and error, because it’s just you versus the room and the smart money’s on the room.

Testing your observation, memory, logic and lateral thinking capability far beyond the average Travel Inn, 100 Rooms excels in the inventiveness behind the puzzles it poses – no two room solutions resemble each other and the game runs the gamut of mental ability from special awareness to mathematics to pattern recognition to deductive reasoning; there’s a room for everyone…

THE BOTTOM LINE

A proper puzzler for the patient problem solver, 100 Rooms features basic controls and colourful if, largely, aesthetically unimportant graphics. The challenge it offers, however, is as far from basic as it gets and, when it comes to the elusive solution, pretty much everything and anything could be vitally important. Check in, check it out…
