As if there was ever any doubt, after Rio, Seasons, Space, Star Wars and the Bad Piggies spin-off, those furious fowl are back to battle the porcine pinchers of their under-developed ova; and this time they brought your friends…
When you’ve got a successful franchise the temptation is to milk it like the very last cow on Earth. This grasping greed and over exposure can prove to grow tedious to the public and, ultimately, disastrous to the franchise itself; think Star Wars prequels, Krispy Kreme, Emeli Santé. So do we really need another iteration of Angry Birds? Yes, of course we do.
Developed directly for those who can’t be happy in their own company, Friends sees the feather flingers hit the social scene hard. Although the option to out-play friends has been available on Facebook for some time, this new version is keyed up for comrade-challenging competition, offering bronze, silver and gold trophies to compete for and crow openly about online (poor bird pun definitely intended).
Syncing automatically with your FB page, gameplay is of the expectedly smooth, high standard and the pummelling problems inventive and innovative, with classic power ups and the usual intuitive operation letting players just jump right in. Yes, it’s more of the same, yes there’s the option to buy and send gifts via in-app purchase and, yes, the Angry Birds udders are being utterly emptied, but free from Jar-Jar Binks and free to download, while its still this much fun, who cares?

THE BOTTOM LINE
Taking the winning formula of an all time classic app and adding in a more social aspect was a no-bird-brainer, and one which was always bound to go down Mighty Eagle-well with Angry addicts. Yes, you HAVE to connect to Facebook to play, meaning you HAVE to have an account. But if you haven’t, just keep banging the rocks together until you get a spark and the rest will follow in time.
