THE STORY
The app most eagerly awaited by egg-amassing enthusiasts everywhere, Rovio are back with the ultimate alternative to Angry Birds, as the Bad Piggies get to tell their take on the tale…
THE EXPERIENCE
It’s hard to emphasise with egg thieves; after all, from the point of view of the birds, it’s akin to having their children stolen. So, when Rovio announced this bacon-flavoured backstory, a prequel of sorts, I feared the absolute worst: the Angry Birds equivalent of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
Fortunately, Rovio are nowhere near as obsessed with destroying their legacy as money lovin’ Lucas, because Bad Piggies is not at all what you’d expect. Owing more to Rovio’s other recent physics-puzzler, Amazing Alex, the king of the pigs is pushing the porkers to go on the very egg hunt that kicks the whole shebang off, but first they must find maps to lead them to nest locations, and they can only do that by constructing all manner of weird and wacky vehicles to get the better of gravity and traverse some seriously tricky terrain.
Clever, cunning and catapult-free, Bad Piggies tests your powers of invention over some 60-odd gruelling levels, providing you with all the pieces of the puzzle and leaving you to devise which combination of wheels, wings, balloons, fans or fizzy cola bottles are required, to get your porcine passenger across the finishing line in one piggy piece. Sound good? It is, just don’t imagine for one second it’s going to be an easy ride…
THE BOTTOM LINE
A hybrid of Angry and Alex presented as a Birds backstory, Bad Piggies is easily the most challenging of the Rovio oeuvre; considerably so, in fact. So, despite that whole nonsense about ‘stealing children’, after seeing what these poor pigs had to go through, I’m prepared to forgive. Eggs anyone?
