Do you enjoy popping balloons? Then you’re either a big kid at heart or really enjoy ruining children’s birthday parties. But regardless of whether you sit on the silly or sociopath side of the fence when it comes to ruining the rubber fun, you’re going to burst with excitement over Bloons TD4…

THE EXPERIENCE

Some apps appear deceptively simple when you first download them. The graphics, although detailed and vibrant, seem a little lacking in dimension and, after selecting the easy level to start with and failing to read through any game playing instructions, you lull yourself into a false confidence that the app is easy and that, perhaps, you’ve just wasted £1.99 on some balloon-based business clearly meant for kids.

Well, as you may have surmised, this was exactly my idiotic introduction to Bloon TD4 – a couple of levels of inflated arrogance over my mastery of the monkey army, towers and tricks you employ to pop the pre-determined path-following floaters, then a sudden drop in smugness as the pace picked up and my airborne adversaries suddenly toughened up.

Basically a game of strategy the more you stop the more money you make to upgrade to ever bigger and better balloon-beaters, from thorn firing towers to catastrophic cannon, exploding pineapples, devastating mortar strikes and, of course, the good old fashioned monkey with a gun, the whole shebang is oddly addictive and thoroughly frustrating when even just one balloon beats your barricade.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Testing your tactics and timing as the monkey wages war against its natural enemy, the balloon, Bloon TD4 is eye-catching, delivers good gameplay, a nice variety of levels (15 in total), three difficulty settings and a freeplay mode once you defeat a track, all of which makes for an excellent time-killer whose price is anything but over-inflated…
