THE STORY
You take the role of a cat guarding cheese against mice in this game that’s billed as being physics based. No, really.
THE EXPERIENCE
We know it’s only a few days since our review of Crazy Mouse – Cheese Cake, but here’s another game with a cheesy theme.
Your character, Jimmy the cat, has to protect cheese from mice. What this amounts to is removing ‘mouse blocks’ from stacks that also include ‘cheese blocks’ so that only cheese blocks are left. The stacks sit on shelves, and if more than three cheese blocks fall off a shelf you are done for and the mice win.
The physics comes in because of the gravity simulation as blocks teeter and fall. It’s a bit of a stretch, to be honest as this is precisely what you get in games like Angry Birds, so it’s nothing new. But the gameplay is fun enough.
As you move through the levels you encounter more than just cheese blocks and mouse blocks. ‘Frozen’ blocks make other blocks sticky and unmoving for a few seconds, while indestructible, unmovable blocks impede your progress.
You’ll also come across ‘rainbow’ blocks, that when tapped turn randomly into cheese blocks or mouse blocks. Then there are the striped blocks. These are random and could be any other type of block.
There’s a catchy background tune and some nice animations to accompany the gameplay, and there are several levels of play. You start with ‘kids’ which is easy, then move through normal, expert, and insane – these levels need to be unlocked as you progress.
Rather cleverly there is also an unlocked extra level – for St Patrick’s Day. Don’t play it till Saturday, though!
THE BOTTOM LINE
Cheese Tower works well enough as a game, and we like the graphics, sounds and animations. But it doesn’t have the little something that would make it really addictive and there’s no way of scooting past a level you can’t solve.
