THE STORY
England – there’s more to it than just Olympic-sized public spending and the annual Burning London festival, you know? And to help educate both Benidorm-bothering Brits and Johnny Foreigner alike, Visit England has just rolled out its official Enjoy England app…
Designed to promote tourism in this, our green and pleasant land, if the idea of taking your holiday in the homeland has never occurred to you before, then let this Albion-based app change your mind. Packed with 1000s of idea for locations, landmarks and attractions to visit, there’s travel content from the Guardian and maps and directions to get you safely there and back without wandering into one of those areas we’re less keen for people to see.
THE EXPERIENCE
Explore suggestions, use the GPS to find out what’s happening in your immediate locale, or punch in the name of somewhere you’re planning on gracing with your presence and the Visit England database is at your disposal. You can specify indoor or outdoor interests (indoor usually advisable. Especially during summer), save ideas to your favourites, download directly from the database to review offline, use the built in QR scanner to garner even more England-education at select destinations and even share your whereabouts of social media sites. In short, it does everything but queue up for you.
THE BOTTOM LINE
A little clunky and often slow to respond, the app kind of matches the country perfectly. There is, undoubtedly much to recommend about visiting or holidaying in England, and while a useful and informed resource for planning your English experience in advance, Enjoy England’s interface is disappointingly lacklustre, coming across as more sleepy village committee than forward thrusting national tourist board. And that’s a real shame in such a big year for tourism.
