The Story
Foodspotting 3.0 has been “completely reimagined”. Previously dubbed “The Instagram of Food”, the app had managed to collect over a million images of people’s favourite restaurant dishes in its two-year existence. The addition of some nifty recommendation options elevate it to a much more useful “Pandora for food”, complete with a smart recommendation engine and peer reviews.
The Experience
Fire up Foodspotting and you’ll be served up with various new ways to browse the mouthwatering galleries of user-uploaded images – nearby haunts, latest uploads, highest rated, recommendations from peers or from your list of tagged favourites.
In each case, you can choose to tag an image as “Want”, “Tried” or “Love”, thus building a database of your personal foods that can then be whittled down with the new Filter Wheel.
And if you choose to dismiss a food or type of food often enough, FS will learn that you don’t like it and stop recommending it to you – great for veggies who don’t want to see images of bloody steaks adorning their smartphone screen.
Each dish is accompanied by a reviews stream – from users, people you follow and even some from professional reviewers, so you can build up your own personalised picture menu. If you happen to like something enough to snap yourself, then you’ll find that it will also post seamlessly onto your Facebook Timeline.
We tested in Germany, and were served up some tantalising local choices, from delicious looking Wiener Schnitzel to beautifully presented white asparagus in hollandaise.
After, ahem, plumping for burger, we got some gorgeous looking shots of some eclectic choices nearby (including one with a side order of bratwurst) although we found that the images could take a while to load.
The Bottom line
Overall though, the added functionality elevates Foodspotting to a genuinely neat way to discover delicious new treats that your tastebuds will thank you for – your waistline on the other hand might not be so grateful.
