THE STORY
War, as we know, is no laughing matter; unless, of course, the war in question is genuinely comical, the soldiers involved are cartoon caricatures, there aren’t unnecessary buckets of pixel-blood being slopped around and everyone has the decency to wait their turn. Welcome to Great Little War Game…
THE EXPERIENCE
Turn-by-turn tactical warfare games might seem a little old-hat in these days of Call of Duty-Free: Black Bin-Liner, Medal of Misspelt Honor and Derek Acorah’s Ghost Recon, but for those of us not interested in yomping through overblown blood and guts whilst receiving orders barked over a headset by a 10 year old in Salt Lake City, there’s still room for a more considered, slower-paced approach to victory; which is where Great Little War Game comes in.
Not everyone can dedicate 100% of their attention to an online battlefield 100% of the day, as some of us have reviews to write, but that’s the beauty of this app – designed to entertain rather than whip up a bloodlust, you can linger over GLWG and take your time to plan your tactics, like playing postal chess against an unnamed computer-controlled enemy, deploying your troops into the best positions possible on land, sea and in the air, and then letting the fire-fight commence, pumping your fist in the air with each kill, thus ruining the chess analogy.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Nicely animated and voiced, this is a well-conceived 3D strategy game for those who don’t believe they actually are a five star general in a bunker mere miles from the frontline. Yes, there are ‘coins’ involved, yes, you will have to buy things to progress more swiftly, but if you’re of a mind that likes to fry things up in a strategy wok, then this little gem is worth every penny.
