The Story
Hextacy, like so many other tessellating shape-related puzzlers before it, relies on a keen eye and the ability to spot a pattern emerging while thinking two or three moves ahead. The basic idea is simple: you must match coloured hexagons in groups of three or more and highlight them to remove them from the board. You get more points the more hexagons you can remove from play. Like we said, simple.
The Experience
You begin the game with a screen full of hexagons. Depending on which game mode you’ve chosen – Normal, Hardcore, or Pure – you need to manoeuvre at least three coloured hexagons into a row. You then highlight the shapes and remove them from play. This continues until either the screen is clear of hexagons or you’ve exhausted all the blocks of three matching colours when the remaining blocks are greyed out. As new shapes drop into the screen, periodically, the greyed out shapes come back into play, allowing you to clear the board. Once you’ve got a couple of rows of greyed out shapes, it’s all but impossible to come back and score big. It’s all about forward planning…
The key of Hextacy is to be able to predict where the hexagons will fall once you removed a particular coloured group. It’s an easy game to get the hang of, but much trickier to master.
In Normal mode you can link any number of shapes together to remove them from play and you get power-ups that, for example, clear tricky columns of shapes. In Hardcore mode, you can only remove groups of three shapes at a time from play, and in Pure mode, power-ups are removed from play, so you have to rely on your colour-matching skills alone.
And if you’re unfortunate enough to be colour blind, which would make matching colours a touch tricky, our boy Magnus (Lorentzon – the game’s deisgner) has even included a a ‘colour blind’ option that drops in high contrast colours for those of you that are optically challenged.
The Bottom Line
Super-addictive, mega-challenging puzzler that’ll keep you coming back for more
