THE STORY
Games played from the point of view of a big, angry fish are rare. Sure, there’s Piranha 3DD, Fish vs. Pirates and Bigmouth Billy Bob Bass Bites Back (I may have made that last one up), but when it comes to aquatic inhabitant apps with real bite, there’s only one Great White option…
THE EXPERIENCE
Sometimes movie tie-ins are slow to follow the feature. Take Jaws: The Revenge, released way back in 1987, its fair to say that this app has been a looooooong time in the making. But then, given how awful the movie was, it makes you wonder why anybody would make it at all. Fortunately though, the similarity to the source material stops at the title, giving you far more to get your teeth into.
With gameplay akin to Piranha 3DD, it’s your task here to steer the remorseless eating machine through the side-scrolling surf off Amity Island, timing your leaps and dives to feast on all manner of ocean-going offerings, including fish, swimmers, divers, seagulls, sunbathers, surfers, ships and, well, pretty much anything and everything is on the menu in this underwater all-you-can-buffet.
Naturally, there’s more to it than just gorging and gore – with timed tasks and targets, you need to ensure you don’t shirk your shark responsibilities, otherwise you’ll have to start over and never earn enough Shark Tooth Coins with which to – wait for it – upgrade your shark, adding thicker skin and sharper gnashers to help you decimate the denizens of the deep faster and more furiously.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Okay, it’s not the most original or feature-packed app of all time and, frankly, for all the relation it has to any of the movies, it could just as easily have been called Seaside Blood Bath, but as a nicely detailed, well-engineered distraction app with good graphics and smooth gameplay, there’s hours of furious fish fun to be had.
