The Story

We at Life Of Android are not huge fans of the tower defence genre, in fact we’d go so far as to say we hold an active disdain for it and the galaxy of near-identical apps it has spawned. If any developer was going to makes us enjoy a tower defence game however, we’d put our money on it being Infinite Dreams, creators of the immense Can Knockdown 2. Sadly, it’s our duty to report that despite some glistening visuals and our best attempts to embrace it, Jelly Defense is bit of a stinker.

The Experience

In fairness to Jelly Defense, it is one of the best looking games we’ve seen on an Android handset yet. A stark colour scheme of red, blue and grey isn’t used to mask the need for graphical detail as many apps do. On the contrary, it enhances the app to the point where it’s almost interesting to play… almost.

In the unlikely case you’re a complete stranger to tower defence games, and Jelly Defense is no different to the rest of them, here’s how they work. You have something that you want to protect from some enemy forces, in this case some green crystals. The evil hoards will leisurely walk towards their objects of desire in order to steal them. You can blow them up along the way by creating slightly different types of bombardment weapons.

As you can hopefully see, it’s a pretty stale genre for a reason and Jelly Defense’s attempts to innovate the action by dividing your enemies into blue and red categories doesn’t really work either. Sure the monotony of routinely upgrading your towers is somewhat compelling but only in the sense you feel a desperate need to keep playing to justify the amount of time you’ve already invested.

The killer flaw for this app is its dreary pace. Most tower defence games operate at the pace of a funeral march but in the time it takes you to play one level of Jelly Defense, you could make a grilled cheese sandwich, leave it to cool off and then eat your tasty treat. It…really…is…that…slow.

It’s not like we’re averse to detailed apps. We’ve enjoyed Pocket League Story and Virtual City in recent weeks so we figure it can’t be us.

Jelly Defense simply isn’t good enough.
