THE STORY
I AM THE LAW! Well, that’s not strictly true according to the charges I’ve faced in the past for Impersonating a Police Officer, but thanks to the mavericks at Rebellion, now wrong-doers can cop a load of my own brand of justice. And this time the zombies are real…
THE EXPERIENCE
Launched to coincide with the cinematic release of DREDD 3D across the country (which I haven’t seen yet but hope it’ll be something of an improvement on the truly Dredd-ful 1995 Sylvester Stallone and Rob Schneider Mega-Flop), there can be few better combinations for Sci-Fi nerds – 2000 AD’s unrelentingly single-minded server of the severity of the law and an army of zombies loose in Mega-City One. If I was 14 I’d probably explode.
So, what have we got? Well, not wishing to build hopes too much, if this wasn’t Dredd related it’d be a pretty standard shoot ’em up. Comprised of level after similar level of doors, corridors, rooms and zombie types in a handful of varying forms, whilst graphics are sharp and detailed and upgrades plentiful, the repetition and routine of the gameplay would make lesser linked apps become tired and tedious pretty swiftly.
However, this one is linked to Dredd (officially, it seems), so you have the cool uniform of a Street Judge, the Lawgiver gun and a range of special Joe Dredd moves which, if pulled off, not only decimate the oncoming undead hordes in spectacular, reward-giving, style, but also make you feel every bit THE LAW!
THE BOTTOM LINE
And it’s this that saves Judge Dredd vs Zombies – the comic/movie tie in elevates this otherwise average affair to fairly addictive status; that and the gloriously gory graphics. With gameplay a simple matter of run and shoot (there’s a large element of auto-aim involved), this may not be the most challenging zombie zap app out there, but it is the only one set in Mega-City One.
