THE STORY
War; what is it good for? Well, given the innumerable games it’s spawned over the years, whilst war may suck pretty badly for those involved at the time, it’s clearly all kinds of awesome for everyone after the fact. Take the latest armed assault to appear in the Android arsenal, Modern War – a gleeful, mainly immoral, mostly mercenary MMO take on the modern armed forces that could blow you away…
THE EXPERIENCE
We here at the heart of the Android app world love a bit of army-based bother, a snippet of sniping, a touch of tactical tank busting and, of course, making a killing whilst making a killing, which is why we became quite taken with Modern War, a somewhat cynical take on, well, modern war, where once you’ve chosen and attired your avatar, you can engage in a staggering array of missions.
Naturally, I adopted the outfit of a naval commander in white slacks, natty blue blazer and white officer’s cap – a look that stands out nicely in the jungle and desert stages. From here on in you build your base, recruit your troops and, the best bit, accept missions to wander into insurgent camps or neighbouring bases and, well, blow stuff to oblivion.
All completed missions result in cash rewards which you can use to fashion your forces until you’re the dominant power in the region; and as it’s an MMO too, you can add allies from your friends and wage war against, well, anyone who irks you!
THE BOTTOM LINE
Mixing glorious high-res graphics with amusing action (the bad guys actually scream when you ‘off’ them), Modern War may be a freemium straining to unleash shock and awe on your account, but the wait to power up is considerably shorter than most, making this MMO both hugely playable and brutally addictive.
