The Story
Moto X Mayhem is a motocross app for Android where you’re tasked with navigating across some perilous terrain without suffering terminal paralysis. An engaging mix of tilt and touchscreen controls make for a great fun and plenty of crashes along the way. If only a few more levels were included for your 59p we’d be praising this app to the high heavens.
The Experience
At its core, Moto X Mayhem is an app about survival rather than a race against the clock. Sure each stage you complete is timed and counts towards your final total but when you’re crashing at least 10 times a level, with a one second penalty for each life lost, then your main achievement is crossing the finishing line.
Controlling your rider is a pretty effortless experience. Although you’d think employing tilt and touchscreen controls at the same time is a bit of a mind-melter, the two work surprisingly well together. Responsiveness is perfectly judged and once you’ve learnt each stage’s layout through trial and error, the overall gaming experience is a joy to play through.
Our major qualm with Moto X Mayhem is that we’d completed half of the app within half an hour of downloading it. Although you do get four whole courses for the princely sum of 59p they’re not rendered in 3D graphics, or even particularly outstanding 2D graphics for that matter, so we’re at a loss as to why we didn’t get a little bit more for our money.
That said, when we compare Moto X Mayhem to the similar Trial Xtreme, we find Moto X the more rewarding offering. It’s simpler landscapes simultaneously make for a tougher game to play and easier one to judge your tilt controls in. If we could have squeezed a few more hours out of Moto X Mayhem, you’d be reading much higher mark below.
The Bottom Line
A good motocross app lacking in the replay value to make it truly great.
