THE STORY
Give a man a fish and you’ll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you’ll feed him for a lifetime. Teach a ninja to fish and you’ll have a kick-bottom angling action app that blends casting and katanas to reel you in hook, line and sinker…
THE EXPERIENCE
Ninjas – when they’re not busy immerging from the shadows and beating seven shades of shinobi out of badly dubbed unsuspecting ne’er-do-wells, there’s nothing they like to do better than unwind with a spot of crochet, basket weaving and, of course, fishing. At least that’s true in the case of less-than-maiming-match fit ninja, Otoro, who clearly, needing to shed a few pounds, seems stuck on a sushi diet.
The principle behind Ninja Fishing is gloriously simple – cast your line, tilt your device to guide your hook past all the fish below in a bid to sink as low as possible, before catching as many of the delicious denizens of the deep as you can on the way back up and slicing them into sushi in mid-air to earn gold. But if you think that sounds easy, you’re so very wrong
With a wide variety of the always on the go gill-given to avoid on the descent, going deep to discover the likes of sunken treasure relies on rapid reactions, while collecting the biggest catch coming up calls on even quicker coordination.
Rewarded with gold and new fish to ferret for, gameplay varies nicely and swims along smoother than a greased grouper, while graphics are sharp, colourful and entertaining – everything the real world of fishing is not.
THE BOTTOM LINE
As much fun with fish as is likely or decent, Ninja Fishing is an excellent time/fish killer. However, as with practically all freemiums, advancement often calls upon in-app spending. But then there’s no such thing as a free lunch; unless you’re a sushi-loving ninja with a sword, of course.
