The Story
Osmos HD is nigh on impossible to explain but a whole lot of fun to play. Before it arrived on Android, Apple deemed this physics-based strategy app their ‘iPad Game of the Year’ and our own opinion doesn’t lie too far from that assessment.
The Experience
Since Osmos HD is one of the most innovative downloads we’ve seen in a while, it’s a little tricky to convey without using the description ‘space blob absorption app’. While this may be 100 per cent true, we realise it does not make for a comprehensible sentence.
Like Space Guru, the basic goal of Osmos HD is to fuse two different objects. In a Darwinian twist of events, one cell has to be bigger than another in order to absorb its prey. Bump into an organism when your too small and you’ll dramatically lessen in size resulting in almost certain failure.
Usually each level revolves around one goal, that of being the biggest blob in the playground. This will allow you to dine out on any organism going including those sentient enough to try avoiding your looming presence, those trying to suck you into their gravitational field and those which can shrink you if consumed at an inappropriate moment.
Although this kind of variety might seem relatively humdrum it really does help to flesh out the app into something you can waste a lot of time with.
If you like the sound of Osmos HD so far, be sure to download it for your Android tablet. While a smartphone version is available, the game works much better when you’ve got plenty of room to judge your surroundings. One ill-advised tap can often spell ‘game over’ for a humble blob making for a harsh but rewarding difficulty curve.
So Osmos is just as hard to define as it is to put down. That much we know and that much will be emphatically explained once it grabs it’s rightful place on your Android handset.
The Bottom Line
A refreshingly innovative and immensely entertaining app for Android.
