THE STORY
Settle down, for it’s a story as old as the Sands of Time themselves – way back in ancient Arabia a princess is pinched by a wicked wizard and you, the love of her life, are dumped in the dungeon, doomed to die. Through a combination of combat and a lot of acrobatics, you must escape, defeat the evil doer, and save your sweetheart. But you knew all that really, didn’t you?
THE EXPERIENCE
Yes, one of the most famous games ever has come to Android; and even on a grim, grey, autumn day in the UK, the world is a brighter place! Prince of Persia broke the platform mould way back in the dark digital days of 1989, but Ubisoft have got it out, dusted it down and given it fresh life for the move to mobile, and the result is pure platform pleasure.
As addictive as ever, you might expect a game of such an advanced age to feel antiquated and retro to the point that even nostalgia doesn’t make it playable, but whilst the storyline may be the same, the all-new skin gives proceedings an utterly fresh feel, blending great graphics and free flowing gameplay to bring the whole Arabian adventure bang up to date as you attempt to escape the dark and deadly dungeons against the acrobatic odds.
Offering multiple modes covering Normal to let you take your time and linger over the lethal tricks and traps, Time Attack which, akin to the 89 original, gives you just 60 minutes to save the day, and Survival which gives you the same 60 minutes against the Sands of Time… but demands you do it without dying; so good luck with that.
THE BOTTOM LINE
A true platform classic reborn for 2012, with concise controls to keep things uncluttered and the screen clear for you to focus on the fun, Prince of Persia is £1.99 very well spent. Welcome back, your Highness!
