THE STORY
It may seem a little early in the season for something that smacks so much of Halloween, but if you’re desperate for a play as a pumpkin-headed, crossbow wielding wotnot with a desire to save pumpkin-children from an onslaught of zombie birds, then your luck is in! You’re also a little weird, but we’ll let it slide…
THE EXPERIENCE
The sequel to last year’s Shoot The Birds, Pumpkin Boy is back and in fine feather-ruffling form as he takes on the fiendish small-fry thieving flock once more. However, in a (seemingly very popular amongst app developers) twist on his last encounter, the birds are now, largely inexplicably, winged members of the unpleasantly undead. Damn zombies.
Excellently animated, Shoot The Zombirds is at the basic level a simple stand-and-shoot that’s about little more than ensuring as many zombirds get the point of your crossbow as possible before you run out of arrows; and if that’s the way you want to play it, then that’s fine. However, beyond that the game is far more involved, testing your timing, rewarding your reasoning and applauding your aim as you battle to stop the feathered frights flying off with the Pumpkids.
With sharp, vibrant graphics, swift, smooth gameplay and an ideally intuitive interface, this is good, solid freemum fun, but as is ever the nature of such beasts, you may find you need to be buying in-game coins a lot sooner than you’d hoped.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Hugely playable, eminently enjoyable, undeniably addictive, Shoot the Zombirds is a rapid action app that throws in magic pumpkin power-ups and ample objectives and upgrades to result in good old fashioned zombie bird battling app entertainment – don’t wait for October to bring the evil avians some pumpkin payback…
