The Story

SPB Brain Evolution challenges you to train your brain using a raft of complex (for some) puzzles and challenges. As time progresses, said brain exercise should result in your brain becoming more lithe, a little like an Austrian skiing instructor, and more able to deal with decision-making in a timely manner. That’s the theory anyway…

The Experience

Brain Evolution begins by administering five challenges designed to calculate your brain power. It’s refreshing to know that despite our advancing years, the Life Of Android team still have the minds of children. We like to think of it as a compliment.

Memorics, Arithmetic and Quadronica are unlocked from the off – Memorics requires you to remember ever more complex patterns of moving and static shapes and colours on a grid, Arithmetic is gloriously self-explanatory, and Quadronica challenges you to find rectangles of similar colours in a grid of various hues.

Play these and score the necessary points while doing so and you can level up and unlock more advanced games, like Pairs – where you have to find identical shapes hidden beneath advent calendar-style doors on the screen – or Numbers – where you’re charged with finding the groups of numbers that add up to a total you’re given, which is harder than it sounds. As you progress further, you unlock more advanced levels for each game and more games are added to your available list.

While you play, SPB Brain Evolution keeps a tab on your brain power score and adjusts it as you become more and more cerebrally adept.

Now we’re not entirely convinced our drink-addled minds have made much progress, but Brain Evo seems to think we have, so that’s all that counts. Certainly the pain of trying to remember our times tables has almost been too much on a number of occasions.

Whatever the result, there’s no doubt that SPB is a challenging diversion and well worth the £1.99 asking price. After all, it can’t hurt to give your grey matter a workout every once in a while, can it?

NB: The app itself is free from Android Market, but the £1.99 is an in-app purchase.
