THE STORY
Okay, stick with me. You awake from hyper-sleep (which sounds pretty restless to me) in your spaceship after a whoppingly narcoleptic 5312 years asleep, woken only because said ship has detected an object of intelligent origin. The object? A series of glowing platforms packed with tricks, pitfalls, portals and plenty of opportunity to test your recently awoken reactions: an arcade in space…
THE EXPERIENCE
We hope you’ve got an awful lot of free time coming up, because you’re going to require every waking second of it. Imagine a Tron-style navigational game set across 60 separate floating death-tracks in space. Now imagine pure reaction gameplay, superb graphics, an original techno soundtrack and an experience liable to make you as twitchy as a Twitchy McTwitch, and you’ve got the basics of this fantastic game.
Select your ship, customise and then take to the track in a full-pelt, all-out attempt to get from one end to the other, careening wildly from side to side to collect points and pass through portals, without hitting a hole and plummeting to your explosive end in a thoroughly space-physics denying way.
Using spot-on tilt motion to steer and a simple tap or double-tap to vault the voids, Starbounder looks as good as it sounds, sounds as good as it looks, and play even better.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Thrilling, brilliantly designed and utterly addictive, the graphics are pin-sharp and the gameplay smoother than a velvet space otter – I challenge any true space-race loving gamer not to become obsessed with Starbounder from the very first flight. If you’d been forced to sleep for well over 5000 years, this is what you’d want to wake up to.
