Newly released for Android, Super Mega Worm is a story as old as time itself. Meet Wojira, a giant death-worm hell bent on wiping out the human race. We littered the ground, contaminated the air and burned a whole in the atmosphere – and now we’re going to pay.
The first thing you need to know about Super Mega Worm is that you control the worm. The aim of this game isn’t to prevent this monster from feasting on human flesh – quite the opposite – it’s to make sure that no civilian goes uneaten. Wojira mostly looks like other worms, except he has teeth like a Mach 3 razor blade, the ability to spit acid from its mouth and can grow to the size of several double decker busses. Basically, it’s one big, bad worm and boy does it mean business.
After enjoying a cult success on iOS, we’re glad to see Super Mega Worm crawl its way over to Android to reek further destruction. It’s a game that gets very bloody, very quickly, and all the gore is lovingly rendered with a retro arcade charm. Perfectly square drops of crimson 8-bit blood splatter the screen, dripping down onto the pixelated grass and into the digital soil – it’s a joy to behold.
There are two game modes – adventure and time attack –both of which are based on the same basic gameplay. To control Wojira you simply direct it with the D-Pad and collect the bonus gems that lurk underground, before bursting to the surface every now and again to terrorise the masses. There are also plenty of animals scattered around too, which are particularly useful for recovering your energy as it gradually depletes while your not guzzling blood. As you’d expect, the Adventure mode gets harder as you progress through the level, with less opportunities to reach the surface as the worm comes under attack from police, land-mines and military.
While there could arguably be a few more game modes and options to spice up the gameplay, this is a good old-fashioned arcade game with a frequently hilarious script. The short sequence which introduces the Adventure mode is worth the price of the game in itself, and there are many hours of fun to be had in trying to better your top score.
THE BOTTOM LINE
It’s difficult to pick faults in a game as loveable as Super Mega Worm, so we won’t bother. Download this app immediately, or forever live in fear of the almighty Wojira.
