Despite sounding like a Middle Ages-set blaxploitation flick from the 70s, this audio-visual app extravaganza is an 8-bit adventure of an altogether unexpected sort. So get set for some stylish magic and mystery backed by its own epic soundtrack…

Earphones on – Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery is a stereo experience; and a fragmented, deranged, almost nightmarish one at that. With a whole album’s worth of score written by composer Jim Guthrie, alongside the clashings and clangings associated with actions, the whole atmosphere of the app sets its stall out from the first, like Radiohead at their darkest, or the soundtrack to Chris Morris’s surreal Blue Jam radio show. Then there’s the game itself, an 8-bit, barely chromatic, fantasy world of quests, warrior monks, wolves and mysticism that you have to ‘tap-tap’ your way through, studying odd objects, searching buildings, talking to locals, learning ‘sworcery’, hacking up beasties and solving ‘mystical music mysteries’… while the soundtrack continues to do its level best to work its way into your subconscious only to remerge later while you sleep. An utter curiosity, while the actual puzzle solving part of the equation tends to err towards the easy, it’s the whole experience that counts with Superbrothers and, if you’re into old school style cave-raiding-esque gaming with a twist, you may find yourself frowning a lot more than you usually would at an app, but I guarantee you’ll keep playing! [Not a valid template]

Sophisticated in its simplicity, Superbrothers is leagues ahead of any other game of its genre. Cleverly conceived, brilliantly executed and completely compelling, this is a truly class act app that’ll keep you hooked from start to finish. And leave the soundtrack and effects etched indelibly across your brain for the rest of you life.
