THE STORY
It’s a story all too familiar – you’ve gone and pinched a cursed idol from a lost temple and, lo and behold, you’ve incurred the wrath of some pretty angry monkey demons who are clearly not going to let you off with a caution. It’s time to run like the very monkey demon of the Baskervilles was on your trail.
THE EXPERIENCE
Initially sceptical, two minutes was all I needed before addiction set in and now I can see the rest of the day being whittled away fleeing satanic simians. Yes, if you thought that hurtling around a dilapidated temple complex, swiping the screen and tilting your phone to safely avoid pits, low-hanging burning bars and crumbled pathways, while attempting to grab power-up coins with a pack of very vocal death-chimps on your heels, makes for some good solid entertainment, you were bang on the money. After this review, no more work will be achieved this day.
THE BOTTOM LINE
More fun that a barrel full of demonic monkeys, Temple Run’s graphics are detailed and vibrant, gameplay fluid and fast without being unmanageable, and chimp sound effects consistently both amusing and unsettling. Okay, it’s a basic concept and purely reaction-testing rather than providing any great cerebral challenge, but then if you ever found yourself in a similar situation in real life, it’s unlikely that anything other than legging it as fast as possible would be going through your mind anyway, so in that sense it’s brilliantly realistic too.
A free app that will provide hours of temple-raiding, chimp dodging fun, Temple Run just joined Angry Birds Space on my list of ‘reasons why nothing else has been done’…
