THE STORY

To those of us of a certain generation, Total Recall was a classic slice of Sci-Fi starring the Governor of California, a lady with three breasticles, a psychotic Sharon Stone and the very jolly Johnny Cab. Now, 22 years after the original, it’s been reimagined for both silver screen and Android app alike. Which is fine; as long as they kept the triple-turnout lady lumps…

THE EXPERIENCE

In a crowded app environment that already features the fantastic likes of Dead Space, NOVA 3 and Dead Trigger, you’ve got to up the ante considerably to get a look in when it comes to first-person shooters; even if you are the official app of one of the biggest, most anticipated Sci-Fi movies of the year and you’re only charging a pittance.

So how does Total Recall hold up? Well, you play Douglas Quaid – a man short on real memory who finds himself on an eye-opening adventure caught between dawning reality and a fantasy construct that involves mankind’s greatest secret and a fight for survival and truth. A stylish first-person rail shoot ’em up set across a series of eight epic missions and against detailed 3D backdrops, there’s weapons aplenty available to achieve your obliterating objectives, plus ample upgrades on-hand to really crank up your kill-rate.

Sadly, the action is somewhat let down by a clunky control system and some seriously sluggish target tracking, but with nicely detailed graphics, cartoon-esque cut-scene storyboards and a decent soundtrack, there’s plenty here to keep all but the most demanding Android action aficionados entertained.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Faithful to the movie, neatly designed and a pleasure to play once you adapt to the interface, Total Recall may not be the most memorable of its gaming genre, but a solid shooter with a paranoia-promoting plot, it’s well worth both a play and the piffling price.
