THE STORY
London’s transport and traffic problems are well documented – with literally more than a dozen cars clogging the capital on a daily basis, chaotic carmageddon is just a mis-timed traffic signal away. Think you’re up to the light changing challenge? Welcome to Traffic Panic London…
THE EXPERIENCE
I like to think that when barrel-chested Mancunian misery guts Morrissey wrote the lines “Panic on the streets of London”, the be-quiffed ex-Smiths singer and national spirit naysayer had somehow channelled ahead into the future to this latest app from Neon Play. What’s more, as largely unlikely as that already seems, I can even imagine a momentary smile crossing his mug as he brought the city’s centre to an explosion-wracked standstill through a simple tap of his finger; that’s how entertaining this is.
Combining excellent graphics with swift gameplay, the premise is simple: monitor the traffic flow and tap the screen to change the lights and right of way. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But the challenge here is all about timing for, if you get it wrong, many will die. Especially if you decide to try and earn points not by controlling the traffic but by blowing up as much of it as possible with your assortment of bombs – yep, it’s that kind of game.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Featuring Traditional, Classic, Historic and Tourist stages, some nicely detailed, if confused views of London that places the Eye in Piccadilly Circus and even plops a Police Box (TARDIS) on the corner add to the ambiance of a hugely entertaining app. With the options open to play nice or nasty depending on your mood, it may not be the most sophisticated of games, but when it comes to fun it’s sheer streets ahead.
