After an epic wait of a year and a half since it first flung open its doors to an app-eager public in the US, Amazon’s own Android Appstore has finally launched for fans of the open source OS in Europe.
Going live in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy, key features of the new shopping jungle’s store include an innovative approach to pricing that’s said to provide more flexibility than on offer over at Google Play, a Free App of the Day every day, and the store’s own app to let you browse and download directly on your device.
“Customers in the US have purchased millions of apps, games, in-app items and subscriptions since the store launched last year, and we’ve received great feedback about discovery features like Free App of the Day,” said Jim Adkins, Amazon’s vice president of Amazon Appstore. “Amazon has spent years developing innovative features that help customers find and discover the products that are right for them and have applied that know-how to the Amazon Appstore. We’re delighted to extend that experience to our European customers.”
On the developer side, Amazon’s plans have caused some controversy with the online uber shop reserving the right to alter app prices and even let them go for free if they so desire, but regardless of what may sound like a bit of a rum deal the likes of Zolmo, Rovio, Glu Mobile, TinyCo and Skyscanner are already on-board.
So, with the thumbs up from the big-guns and the stall set out, the official app obtaining options for Android are now even more expansive than ever, giving the Google OS users the chance to compare prices before downloading apps; now what other platform offers such a free market?
