The BBC have launched an app to determine 2G and 3G coverage across the green and pleasant lands of the United Kingdom. Users who download the UK 3G Survey app will see their Android record its experience of 3G network coverage for every moment it’s switched on over the period of a month.
The data is then to be sent off to Epitiro, the firm which engineered Ofcom’s recent UK mobile broadband speed survey, where it will be collated into a map that’s searchable by postcode.
While it all sounds a tad dry at the moment, it could be a lifesaver come that dodgy staycation spent in the Outer Hebrides.
“Coverage is the number one issue for consumers,” said chief executive of Epitiro, Gavin Johns. ”Our coverage app will provide the information consumers need to see if 3G services are available and from which mobile operator. As mobile broadband is important to many of us, we hope people volunteer and make the project a success.”
The UK 3G Survey is free to download from the Android Market, all data recorded is anonymous and very little bandwidth is used in the process according to the BBC.
