BBC iPlayer app coming to Android

Posted by on the 9th February 2011

First the good news: the BBC has finally announced its much anticipated iPlayer app will be winging its way to Android devices tomorrow or Friday. Now for the bad: it will only work on smartphones or tablets rocking Android 2.2 Froyo or later, have Adobe Flash 10.1 installed and boast a Wi-Fi connection. It also won’t stream over 3G due to technical reasons. Unfortunately, this will mean a fair whack of Android patrons still working older versions of the OS will be sidelined. Grrrrr.

Android users have been able to access and watch content on BBC iPlayer via the web browser but this app will no doubt make the experience more seamless and stable. The app lets you watch live TV programmes and listen to radio across all BBC channels as well as catch-up with shows and broadcasts from the last seven days. Remember to look for Life of Android’s app review in the coming days.

Even with all the prerequisites…it’s TOTAL Rubbish. I doubt it will last on anyone’s handset or tab for longer than 1 attempt at viewing something :-(

@ Catherine. You can find Flash 10.1 in the Android App store (search for Flash 10.1, natch). If you’ve installed it already it will say ‘installed’, if not it will offer it for download. If you don’t have a phone using Android v2.2 then I suspect you won’t be able to find it. To check the version running, from any ‘home’ screen press menu button, then select ‘about phone’, then ‘software version’ and look for the ‘android version’ – this will show what version you are running.

Don’t worry – as soon as iPlayer for Android is out we’ll run full details of how to use it, a review and a video too!

All well and good but you’ve not included any links as to how to install the required Flash, or how to check on your versions of Flash or the Android OS.
    These would be helpful.
