iOS 6 iMaps Less Than iDeal

It’s not our place to make ourselves look better by highlighting the flaws in others and, frankly, when you’re as awesome as Android you don’t have to, but there’s no point in denying that Apple seems to have dropped the ball with at least one large element of its new iOS 6 update.

While we understand the fruity phone pusher’s desire to distance itself from our open source OS hero by removing Google Maps from its update offering, it seems the packaged replacement isn’t exactly winning any fans.

Issues reported so far from users of its new map app put you in mind of what an A-Z would be like if it was produced on info from Wikipedia – towns such as Stratford-upon-Avon and Solihull have gone AWOL (the latter could be seen as a positive), Luton has been relocated to somewhere near Exeter on the south coast, satellite images of some smaller places, like Scotland, are completely cloud covered, a search for Manchester United Football Club leads to the home of Sale United FC’s under 8s, Helsinki railway station has been downgraded to a park whilst, worst of all, the app’s digital subsidence seems to have left several British buildings unceremoniously dumped in rivers.

Dutch direction pointer TomTom which worked on the app with Apple has been quick to point out that it only provided the data used for the maps and was not responsible for how it worked. So, nicely distanced there.

Of course, we know that Apple will eventually sort all this out with an epic series of updates and, one day, it may even be almost as accurate as good old Google Maps, but if you happen to know an iPhone iOS 6 update user who’s planning on queuing outside an Apple Store today for the iPhone 5 but isn’t sure exactly where it is, be nice, recommend they Google it first.
