Google’s Android OS is the best smartphone platform for app developers in general, according to research by market research firm Evans Data.
Over 47 per cent of the 400 commercial developers questioned for the The Application Distribution report classified themselves as programming for the Android Market, compared to 43 per cent working for Apple’s App Store.
Android was also crowned as the best app store for developers over the long term, with many expressing the opinion its Market will be the pivotal platform to develop for within the next two years. Strangely Blackberry’s App World came out on top in terms of possible income but this is likely down to the business-oriented nature of the apps wich contrasts with the broader range of output produced for Android and Apple.
“The industry has a conception that developers are going to target either Android or Apple, and those two will define the market,” commented Janel Garvin, CEO of Evans Data. “However, there’s room for more than two. Blackberry developers are not as plentiful but 13 per cent make over $100,000 from the App World apps, which is considerably more than Android or Apple developers, and will help that platform continue to be compelling to developers, especially in the enterprise.”
