Android has been confirmed as America’s most popular smartphone OS for the third quarter of 2011, according to new data released yesterday by Nielsen.
In total, Android holds a 42.8 per cent share of the US smartphone market placing the operating system ahead of Apple’s iOS platform (28.3 per cent) and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry OS (17.8 per cent). This means Apple’s iPhone remains the most popular smartphone handset on the market.
Combined, Android and iPhone users now account for 71 per cent of the market with the two user groups downloading 83 per cent of all mobile apps in the 30 days prior to the completion of Nielsen’s latest report.
In total, 44 per cent of all US mobile phone users own a smartphone.
