Shore Thing for Pebble Smartwatch

Those of us of a certain age can hark back to the dark old days when feature phones roamed the Earth and, other than text, play Snake and do something called ‘calling’ people, gangs of stabby hoodies barely bothered to steal your mobile at all. But, thanks to the arrival and rise of the smart equivalent, those horrendous days are now long gone and we have apps galore to amuse and advise.

However, if there’s one downside to having a world of info-entertainment (probably an Americanism) on your phone, it’s that you have to pluck it out of your pocket every time you get a message or need to know something, running the dual risks of dropping it and/or attracting the attention of those aforementioned teen knifey types, like Frodo, the One Ring and the Ring Wraiths.

Well, that could soon change thanks to the Pebble – an Android powered smartwatch designed to work in conjunction with your smartphone to have your apps ready on your wrist.

Starting life as a Kickstarter campaign, the goal was to reach US $100,000 to get the Pebble into development; 28-hours later nearly US $1 million had been pledged and it was time for the Pebble to rock.

Linking up over Bluetooth 4.0, the Pebble lets you pop over the apps you use most, checking email, SMS messages, weather reports, news etc, or change the track you’re listening to with a simple glance under your cuff. Using an E-Paper display, everything is sharp and crisper than a deep fried Scotsman, while the low energy consumption means the rechargeable battery is good for around a week per charge.

Running Ice Cream Sandwich, the Pebble is still at the start-up stage, but if you fancy getting involved and enjoying the early rewards of investment, head to the Pebble Kickstarter page now and help make your apps more accessible.
