Resistance is futile: the rise of Android is unstoppable. Google’s VP of Engineering and Android guru Andy Rubin today tweeted, ‘There are over 300,000 Android phones activated each day”. In scientific terms, that’s a whole lot of phones.
What’s more, it represents significant growth from summer, when Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt announced that 200,000 Android phones were being activated a day . The 200,000 figure was disputed by Apple boss Steve Jobs, who announced that Apple was activating 210,000 iOS devices every day and said, “We think some of our friends are counting upgrades in their numbers.”
A Google spokesperson later told Fortune, “The Android activation numbers do not include upgrades and are, in fact, only a portion of the Android devices in the market since we only include devices that have Google services.”
Naturally, we’re looking forward to Steve’s response to Google’s latest claim. Once thing is for sure: Android is growing quickly. And in 2011, it’s almost guaranteed to claim the smartphone crown.
