The Week in Android

Arriving on your digital doorstep a day later than usual due to a bit of business in Berlin, here’s your heaped helping of the last five days within the, frankly, pretty awesome Life of Android. I hope you brought your appetite…

Yes, this week’s round-up comes cobbled together from the gargantuan gadget battlefield of the IFA consumer technology expo over in Germany and is also, incidentally, brought to you by the letter P and the number 4.

Another week running thick and fast with open source OS excellence, covering both business and pleasure, and Android activity up in space and back down on Earth – pay attention now, there’ll be a test at the end…

THE APPS

Gears & Guts

Proving that there really is no end to the successful mix of zombie and… well, anything, Gears & Guts puts you behind the wheel of a undead destroying automobile, so buckle up, put your foot into the carpet and keep those windscreen wipers going because its going to get messy. Full ‘run-down’ here

LivingSocial

Offering more online bargains than a digital David Dickinson, LivingSocial’s daily deals app is the quickest and easiest way to snap up anything from lessons on driving to offers on sky diving and from cheap eats to luxurious meets – every day can be an adventure far from beyond the dreams of avarice. We’ve just been hang gliding with cats. Check it out here. We haven’t really…

UbiCabs

Need a minicab in and around the London area? Want something reliable with a fixed quote price, licenced drivers and the option to order via app and trace your cab’s arrival by map? Then it’s time to try out the wheely wonderful world of UbiCab; we did and enjoyed several seamless journeys free from hassle, delay and, splendidly, unsought, overly vocal, un-PC driver opinions! Hop in.

THE NEWS

Meshin Does the Business

Launched onto Google Play a week last Friday, if even now in an age of advanced apps right there in the palm of your hand you still can’t stay organised, then Meshin Calendar: For Evernote is for you…

Android Literally Out of this World

Just when you thought the uses of Google OS-blessed devices couldn’t get any more expansive, suddenly the space-monkeys over at a little place called NASA go and up the ante far higher than any other. Called PhoneSat, Android is heading for orbit…

Not So Flash

With the official Adobe app no longer available for download from Google Play, less intelligent Android users have been seeking an unofficial solution from third party Russian app stores… with hugely predictable results.

Chips are Down for NetEnt and Android

The Swedish gambling gurus at Net Entertainment bring their money making / bank breaking online apps to Android. Offering all manner of superior games, play the house by all means, just don’t bet it.

TomTom App for Android Unveiled

Finally, fresh from the IFA tech expo in Berlin, TomTom has announced an on-coming app for Android set to challenge Google Maps and lead the field in online and offline navigation.

AND FINALLY…

That’s all from this week’s recap and all from me in Berlin. I’m off now to change onto my lederhosen and slip into some stein-driven stereotypes. Auf wiedersehen, pets!
