It’s been another wet and wild week in the UK, dashing all hopes of ‘a bit of a summer’ so far and leaving us in our post-jubilee weekend depression to turn to the only thing we know will never disappoint. That’s right, the all-singing, all-dancing, all-conquering world of Android and its associated apps!
Rising to the challenge to entertain and educate in equal measure, the thinking person’s OS of choice has shone in the stead of that conspicuously absent burning ball in the sky, bathing us in the light of its brilliance each and every day. Monday amused with news that SwiftKey had introduced a quite-literal Queen’s English option for its king of the keyboards, allowing even the lowliest commoner to talk like a toff for the jubilee. Not to be outdone, the second Bank Holiday of the week rolled around, bringing with it undeniably unexpected news from the E3 expo in LA that Microsoft had developed SmartGlass – an app that links your Android with your Xbox to deliver full home entertainment remote control and web browsing on your TV from your smartphone! Not done dazzling us yet, midweek saw Microsoft take centre stage again, this time unveiling on{X}, another existence-enhancing app that lets you automate your Android life. Thursday followed with equally thrilling news from analysts at IDC that Android was predicted to reach 61% worldwide marketshare this very year and go on to dominate at over 50% until at least 2016. And finally for Friday, purveyors of privacy apathetic social network, Facebook, launched its challenge to Google Play and App Store in the US-spelt form of the Facebook App Center, in a bid to merge app sales with social shenanigans and create a fresh new option for app seekers.

Got a memory like one of those things with lot of holes in them, you know, erm, High Court Judges? Never forget a name but equally never recognise the faces they go with? Hitting the back of the Android net just in time for the kick-off at the UEFA EURO 2012 tournament, will ESPN’s extensive app coverage enhance your experience of The Beautiful Game, or is it an own-goal fest ending in an England-esque early bath? What do you think?
