Top Five: Apps of The Week

Well it’s been quite the week again here at the heart of the Android universe. Staunchly ignoring any references to England and EURO 2012, prefering to maintain a dignified silence while secretly fuming and glaring with evil eyes at all Italian produce in Waitrose, we’ve thrown ourselves right into our work instead, revelling in the constant winning streak of everyone’s favourite OS…

A big week for both app releases and news revelations, we start with the latter on Monday and a story relating to an unusual launch from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the form of a ‘game’ in which you take on the role of a refugee fleeing some atrocity and forced to make decisions to decide your fate. Designed to help raise awareness of the plight of refugees the world over, check it out for a real eye-opener. Tuesday was cheerier with tell of a firm in India cooking up a novel use for the Google OS in the form of MAID, an online microwave that uses Android to cook any dish. Next, Wednesday saw top-notch free voice and video call app, Skype, celebrate its 70-millionth download from Google Play. Whilst Thursday saw Gameloft’s stunning The Amazing Spider-man app web-sling its way onto Android, halting all real work while we cleaned up the fully open 3D streets of NYC (full review on Monday). And finally on Friday, more good news arrived from this week’s Google I/O Developer’s Conference in San Francisco with word that Google Chrome has been rolled out on Android, replacing the beta version and bringing better browsing to all and sundry. That’s a lot news right there.

Which leads us neatly to this week’s app-explosion…

Strikefleet Omega

Humans; we’ve been getting on each other’s nerves for so long that, when we finally got our act together and headed into space, it was inevitable that we’d annoy ET too. In this case, however, ET is a big, angry space Hive Queen and we annoyed her so much that she and her drones have destroyed the Earth. So, as the Admiral of Strikefleet Omega it’s down to you to and your crew to stop the Queen wiping out the remaining human colonies. Yes, we REALLY annoyed her…

Oscura

Many apps claim to offer a dark gaming experience, but none quite so literally as this little gem. Things get a bit shady when the lighthouse that illuminates your world explodes and scatters its shards of light across the land, releasing the beastly bad things that had previously been kept to the shadows, and only you can evade the evil doers to collect the shards and restore the light. Well, that remains to be seen…

The Art of Rap

Yo, yo, yo! Word to yo momma! And a big hello to your father too, probably! Yes, changing my name inexplicably from Pritchard to P. Ritchie, tossing on some grotesque gold chains, knocking back the Courvoisier, dabbling in gun crime and picking a fight with the west coast (particularly the Bude massive), you’ll believe a middle-aged, middle class white man can rap. And if I can, so can you…

Starbounder

Okay, stick with me. You awake from hyper-sleep (which sounds pretty restless to me) in your spaceship after a whoppingly narcoleptic 5312 years asleep, woken only because said ship has detected an object of intelligent origin. The object? A series of glowing platforms packed with tricks, pitfalls, portals and plenty of opportunity to test your recently awoken reactions: an arcade in space…

Bordeaux Wine Trip

If there’s something we enjoy here at LOA it’s an app that takes two of our favourite things and mashes them together to form some kind of delicious digital convergence chutney. Take apps and wine, for excellent example. Whilst we often praise the generosity of the grape whilst testing out apps, imagine an app that was all about that august alcohol, an app that doesn’t just encourage the imbibing of fine wine, but also that you do so right at the source. Welcome to Bordeaux Wine Trip…

Looking for more in an Oliver Twist bowl-holding way? Then head this way, you young rapscallion and fill your virtual boots!
