Top Five: Apps of the Week

Surprise! Yes, it’s the weekend already, come around even more quickly than usual this week due to the recession forcing the UK government to cut Tuesdays (and, seemingly, abolish summer) from now on. What this, of course, means is – other than shorter weeks – that you can now look forward to your delicious bite-sized Life of Android round-up hitting your virtual doorstep sooner than ever!

Yup, that’s a week’s worth of the most arresting Android news, covering topics as diverse as the announcement of real RC Android robots becoming available at Google HQ, the Facebook App Center (sic) finally opening its doors in the UK, the fantastic fact that Android now accounts for four out every five smartphones sold in Spain, the late but great launch of coffee-pusher Starbucks’ app on these fair shores and, last but most definitely not least, first word of a clever new app that aims to open up the world of the smartphone to the blind and partially sighted. Good news, indeed!

Then we have our reviews – a full five days of finger-lickingly good app action that… hang on, five days? What about the new Tuesday law? Excuse me a moment… Right, apologies, it seems the Tuesday ban thing was just a dream brought on by eating too much Stilton before bed. Carry on!

Word Lens

No speako da lingo? Can’t follow the foreign? Persist in walking into the wrong restroom in restaurants? Then the answer to your baffled prayers is here as, finally, the world of witchcraft that is Word Lens makes its magical way onto Android…

Swords and Soldiers

History can be a funny thing – written by ‘the winners’, Simon Schama or David Starkey, we only have the flimsiest of evidence to support the ‘facts’ they all claim document the timeline of the Human Race. To that end, then, how do we know Vikings weren’t BBQ obsessed, Aztecs worshiped a pepper and the Chinese love of explosions went beyond fireworks? Precisely. Scene set, premise pushed: welcome to Swords and Soldiers…

Little Devile Air Horn

Ever found yourself in a social/anti-social situation and not been able to find the right words? What about the right noise? Or could it be that you’re simply a technology-touting wind-up merchant of the highest order who likes nothing more than taunting and tormenting your friends? In either case, once more, the expansive world of Android apps has just the thing for you…

Where’s My Perry?

The follow up to the stupendously selling Where’s My Water?, meet Perry the platypus, he’s a semi-aquatic spy who, awkwardly, becomes stuck in his transportation tubes at HQ on his way to saving the world. Now the planet is doomed to destruction at the deformed hands of some megalomaniac; unless, of course, you can work the water to guide him to his briefing…

Amazing Alex

Thanks to Professor Brian Cox from D:ream, Professor Stephen Hawking from The Simpsons, and Doctor Brian May from Queen, physics has never been cooler. Take the phenomenal success of Angry Birds and Where’s My Water? for excellent example. And now welcome too to Amazing Alex, a school-age science nerd who’s cooler than a cryogenic cucumber…

Feeling like the Very Hungry Caterpillar, but for apps? Then you head right here and much away, our Lepidoptera-like friend!
