A sense of fair play may be at the very heart of the Olympic Games but there are always those that seek to spoil the sporting spirit of everything. So it should come as no surprise to anyone at all that the shameless spammers and scammers have been at it again, this time targeting the official Olympics gaming app itself.
Researchers over at GFI Software posted details on Friday of a new meddling malware caught gate-crashing the Games and ruining the fun for everyone. Appearing on several shady Russian websites posing as authentic app markets, the actually highly unofficial London 2012 – Official Mobile Game is chocka-running-blocks with smartphone spoiling software in the non-knockout form of a variant of the Boxer malware.
Mimicking the look and feel of the genuine Google Play like only Ruskie replicas can, there are no winners with these dodgy downloads except for the scheming former-Soviet scammers who are set to take Gold, Silver and Personal Data in every unofficial app event.
Of course the simple solution to avoiding artificial apps is to ensure you download from the proper place, so to go and grab a genuine copy of London 2012 – Official Mobile Game head to Google Play now; or better still check out our review of the app here first and then let the games commence…
