The idea of ending up a refugee is very difficult for us to imagine here in our safe UK homes; and we should be very glad of it. However, conflicts around the world leave people homeless, separated from their families and, quite often, fleeing for their lives every day. So, to help raise awareness of their plight and help us in understanding what it is to be in such an awful situation, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has taken the unusual step of launching an app in which you play one of the displaced…
Called My Life as a Refugee, the app asks you to pick a character and then, following the backstory of why he or she ends up in such a dire circumstances, you’re presented with a series of against-the-clock decisions to make based on those faced by real life refugees, with the choices you make dictating your fate.
An unusual app and an unconventional method to get the message across, My Life as a Refugee pulls no punches over the horror some people are forced to face and, in doing so, is an effective tool in raising awareness.
Downloadable for free from Google Play, why not walk a mile in someone else’s shoes? And then be grateful it’s only an app to you.
