Yahoo, search giant and all-round good egg has launched Appspot. Now you’d expect Yahoo to launch some sort of search-based app and it has, although the search isn’t web-based but rather Android Market-based.
Appspot, you see, helps you find other apps you might like by trawling through Android Market on a daily basis and delivering juicy app picks from the 200,000+ catalogue direct to your Android phone.
The app bases its recommendations on apps you’ve already downloaded and, naturally, removes apps you already own from its suggestions to avoid duplicates.
According to its blog, Yahoo reckons “Mobile users rely on apps to continuously be informed and entertained, yet discovering new apps on a daily basis is still much more difficult and less intuitive than searching for Web content on the PC. At Yahoo! Search, we think there is a better way – both for discovering personally relevant apps on a daily basis and finding the utility apps that help get the job done – regardless of the type of device or platform.”
Yahoo is also launching a desktop version – Yahoo App Search – which also delivers targeted recommendations and direct download links.
There’s one enormous caveat, Appspot is currently only available to US users. We await the UK version with baited breath and we’ll keep you updated…
