Booming third quarter handset sales for Google's smartphone OS
Android software was running on over half of all smartphones sold in the third quarter, according to research firm Gartner Inc. In total, Google’s smartphone OS accounted for 52.5 percent of global smartphone sales, that’s more than double last year’s figure.
Smartphone sales were up as a whole by 42 per cent too, a dramatic rise considering some consumers had delayed purchasing a new handset in anticipation of Apple’s iPhone 4S. read more

Windows Phone has a lot of catching up with Android to do, in the months leading up to August its US market share dropped off from 5.8 per cent to 5.7 per cent. That hasn’t stopped Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer tacking a few pot shots at Google’s smartphone OS though.
Speaking at the Web 2.0 conference in San Fransisco, Ballmer commented, “You don’t need to be a computer scientist to use a Windows Phone, but I think you do to use an Android phone… It is very hard to be excited, for me, about the Android phones.” read more
