Android trounces Apple and Nokia with 50 per cent smartphone sales

Android software was running on over half of all smartphones sold in the third quarter, according to research firm Gartner Inc. In total, Google’s smartphone OS accounted for 52.5 percent of global smartphone sales, that’s more than double last year’s figure.

Smartphone sales were up as a whole by 42 per cent too, a dramatic rise considering some consumers had delayed purchasing a new handset in anticipation of Apple’s iPhone 4S. read more

Report: Android tops Apple in European smartphone OS stakes

Google’s Android OS has surpassed Apple iOS to reach the status of Europe’s second top smartphone platform across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. The Symbian OS remains at number one, according to Internet marketing research company comScore, but Nokia are set to ditch it later this year in favour of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform.

Android’s explosion in popularity was a driving force behind “significant growth” in smartphone adoption from 2010. During July 2011, almost one in every four smartphone users in EU5 reported using an Android smartphone. read more

Android doubles share of world smartphone market in a year

Android has jumped above Apple’s iOS and Nokia’s Symbian to become the world’s most widely installed smartphone OS, new figures from research firm Gartner have declared.

Appearing on 43.4 per cent of all new smartphones sold in the three months to 30 June, Android ‘s market share has jumped dramatically from just 17.2 per cent last year. In total, Google’s OS was installed on 46.8 million of the 107.7 million smartphones shipped over the period. read more
